Happy DongZhi 冬至 Festival

We celebrated 冬至 Dōngzhì Festival in my mother-in-law house. This is one of the most important festivals celebrated by the Chinese. This year it falls on 22 December 2013 on Sunday.

In English, it called Winter Solstice Festival. 冬至 Dōngzhì means "the Arrival of Winter".

Traditionally, all of us need to go home for family gathering. My mother-in-law makes tangyuan (湯圓) or balls of glutinuous rice, which symbolize reunion for us to eat. Each family member should at least eat one tangyuan.

tangyuan (湯圓) is made of glutinuous rice flour in pink and white colors.

Pink ones are stuffed with peanuts and white ones are stuffed with brown sugar. They are cooked in sweet soup and served in a bowl.

Besides tangyuan, there is also a spread of food like stir-fried prawns, steamed chicken deep fried tofu, roast pork and braised chinese mushrooms. Among all, I love the mushroom dish most. This is a traditional Cantonese dish that my mother-in-law cooks. The chinese mushrooms are braised in oyster sauce with dried oysters. Yummy!
